Hill 270 Singapore

Hill 270 Singapore

During World War II, Hill 270 was a key element in Singapore's coastal defense system. It housed a Fortress Observation Post (F.O.P.) that served the Faber Fire Command and a No.2 Battery Observation Post (B.O.P.) for the Buona Vista 15 Inch Battery. The hill's defenses comprised underground ammunition storage and living quarters for the gun crews. Four F.O.P.s were located in the Faber Fire Command, with the others situated on Mount Faber, at Tanjong Gul, and shared with Changi Fire Command at Powder Magazine.

While the two Posts on Hill 270 have since been replaced by a water tank, remnants of various pre-war British military buildings have survived to this day a little further north. The surviving buildings were likely designed as accommodation and ancillary structures such as ablutions, latrines, stores, and a cookhouse, rather than for defensive purposes. Similar structures could be found in many locations across Singapore in proximity to fixed defense positions. Both the F.O.P. and B.O.P. required personnel to man them, and the buildings provided the necessary accommodation, offices, and storage for the men who manned the Posts.
