The building had housed the Provincial Library since 1898. It was completely burnt out during the bombing of Middelburg on 17 May 1940.

These fragments are also known as the "stones of destruction". They are located at Plein 1940, in the long Delft, Onder den Toren, Walplein, Koorkerkhof, Sint-Pieterstraat, de Balans, Groenmarkt, Bachtensteene, Stadhuisstraat, Zusterstraat, Hagepreekgang, Dwarskaai, and the Rotterdamse kaai in Middelburg
The coat of arms of this patrician house ended up in the village of Kleverskerke.
Some smaller pieces can still be found in the Zeeland library.
