Former Village Ornes

During the fighting for Verdun in World War I, this village was completely destroyed and virtually abandoned. Ornes is one of about 20 French villages (Villages Détruits) that were never rebuilt after the war because they were located in the so-called Zone Rouge.

Within this zone, after 1918, the devastation was so great, or the ground so dangerous to build on due to ammunition, mines and other implements of war, that the French government forbade it.

These villages were named "Village mort pour la France" and became a memorial site.
