The Douamont fortress is built in the 19th century as component of the Verdun fortified defence sector. During the First World War, approximately 100.000 soldiers died here. In June 1940, Fort Douaumont fell to the Germans after brief combat. The 155mm armoured turret was - shortly before the German capture - sabotaged by the French garrison.
