commemorative markers, municipality elementary school of Stembert

On the facade of Stembert's municipal elementary school are two Stèles. The Stèles commemorate the fallen soldiers coming from Stembert.

Being remembered from the 1st World War;

CORMAN Victor, age 27, born in Stembert, known in military records as CORMANNE, corporal with the 12th line regiment, killed 12 days before his 28th birthday in Boortmeerbeek and missing ever since.

COUNE Jean, age 26, from Stembert, soldier with the 3rd regiment Chasseurs (Hunters), died in a German lazaret (64th Sanitätskompagnie) at Vladslo on March 27, 1915.

DEBLON Jean, age 29, born in Stembert, soldier in a detachment of artillery support staff, died probably from the Spanish Flu on December 28, 1918 at the Élsene military hospital in Brussels.

DEMOULIN Julien, age 26, born in Stembert, known in military records as DUMOULIN, soldier with the 1st regiment Carbiniers, killed near the Three Moats at Noordschote on April 7, 1915 and missing ever since.

DUMOULIN Emile, age 34, from Stembert, soldier with the 10th line regiment, died in captivity at Holzminden (Germany) on April 22, 1915.

FAUX Marcel, age unknown, from Stembert, soldier with the 3rd artillery regiment (75 mm rapid-fire guns), died at Haacht on September 13, 1914.

HENDRICK Denis, age 21, born at Stembert, soldier with the 3rd regiment Chasseurs (Hunters), killed by shrapnell on July 1, 1916 at Boezinge.

JAMAR Alfred, age 21, born in Stembert, soldier with the 6th line regiment, killed in action on September 10, 1914 at Holsbeek.

NELISSEN Joseph, age 25, born in Stembert, soldier with the intendance, died of wounds from shrapnel from a plane bomb in the military hospital at De Panne on August 14, 1915.

PEROT Auguste, age 23, born in Stembert, soldier with the 3rd Line Regiment, died of wounds from a bullet in the abdomen at Houthulst on September 28, 1918.

SCHUGENS Jacques, age 24, native of Stembert, soldier with the Central Depot of the Engineers, died of wounds sustained, fractured skull, in the field hospital at Hoogstade on April 4, 1916.

ERNST Antoine, 28 years old, from Stembert, brigadier with the 5th artillery regiment, died of wounds in the military hospital in Bruges on May 27, 1940.

FAFCHAMPS Julien, 25, brigadier with the 1st Lanciers regiment, died in captivity at Nienburg (Germany) on November 16, 1940.

GODY Robert, age 29, private with the 31st Line Regiment, killed at Passchendale on May 27, 1940.

HANLET Emile, age 32, from Stembert, Gendarme with the 1st light regiment, killed at Moorslede on May 25, 1940.

KIRFEL Yvon, 20 years old, brigadier with the 1st regiment Genie, killed in action at Hamburg (Germany) on March 18, 1941.

KURTZ Jean, age 28, member of the Armée Secret, executed at Louvigné (Banneux) on September 6, 1944. MAKE REFERENCE !

MICHEL Lucien, age 20, from Stembert, soldier with the Regiment de Fortresse de Liège at the Battice fort, wounded during the attacks on the fort in May 1940, died of these wounds either on June 3 or July 2, 1940 in captivity at Aachen (Germany).

PECHE Servais, 21 years old, from Stembert, corporal in the 2nd regiment Cyclistes Frontières, killed at Geluwe on May 28, 1940.

SAROLEA Alfred, age 55, probably a resistent, shot on April 21, 1943 near the Citadelle of Liège.
