The battery's original armament consisted of six 120 mm guns and two 95 mm guns.
After its construction around 1880, the Hôpital Battery, becoming outdated and too vulnerable, was disarmed in 1900.
It became a "reinforcement battery," ready to be deployed if necessary.
It was not rearmed during the French mobilization of 1914. In 1916-1917, during the Battle of Verdun, the semi-submerged buildings (traverses and barracks) served as shelters for sector troops and as an ammunition depot, offering some protection against most German shells.
