From 1808, Amsterdam's former city hall was housed in the Prinsenhof dating from 1661. The complex was expanded in 1926 in the Amsterdam School style.
During World War II, Amsterdam's German-dominated city council played a major role in the persecution of Jews within the city limits. The German occupying forces had an office in room 226.
