The Arsenal was built between 1610 and 1613 by the house-sitters on the site of the Leper House on Leprozengracht. It served as a city peat warehouse for storing grain, butter, and peat, intended for the poor, such as the residents of the Huiszittenweduwenhof (House-sitting Widows' Court). It replaced an older warehouse on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, which was taken over by the City Pawn Shop.
From 1808 onward, the government used the building as an arms depot, giving rise to the name "Het Arsenaal" (The Arsenal). The arsenal building was used by the Dutch army until May 1940, after which it was taken over by the German army.
The building is currently used by the Academy of Architecture.
