Defense Position Country House "De Poel" M.C. 2-46 R.I.

On May 10, 1940, a section of the Machine Gun Company of the 2nd Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, was stationed at this country house. This company's defensive positions in the vicinity of Kesteren were fully occupied by 4:00 a.m. on May 10th.

These positions included the three casemates at De Spees hornwork, the anti-aircraft position on Markstraat, this position at De Poel manor, a position at Marsdijk, and positions in the stop line near the railway bridge to Rhenen.

Initially, the machine guns of the positions at De Poel manor were positioned on the railway embankment to fire on air targets. From these positions, low-flying German aircraft were repeatedly fired upon throughout the May days. Sometimes, aircraft were actually hit.
