During the 1892 renovation, the Palace of Justice, at the request of the Ministry of War, was fitted with five water cellars beneath the courtyards for emergency drinking water. Designed by Willem C. Metzelaar, they served as military facilities in the event of a siege or crisis.
The water cellars were later converted into archive storage rooms.
After the Second World War, the building took on new functions: the western cellar became a boiler house in 1954, and the eastern one became a company restaurant in 2003. Only a rim of the original water beech trees remains; the rest has disappeared.
The building is currently used as a luxury hotel.
