Gun powder factory "De Oude Molen"

In 1895, the Muiden gunpowder factory decided to move its nitric acid and nitroglycerin production to De Oude Molen. Despite local objections, this decision was made, partly due to its strategic importance for the Defence Line of Amsterdam. After years of debate, the State became co-owner in 1922.

During World War II, the occupying forces removed the installations. After the war, they were refitted with German equipment. In 1953, an explosion caused casualties and damage. In 1972, the company merged with Dynamit Nobel AG to become Muiden Chemie. The complex closed in 1991.

After partial demolition in 1999, the site was partially redeveloped into a business park. The buildings on the Amstel River were preserved. Despite urban expansion and the construction of a motorway, the immediate surroundings remain largely intact. The complex is now used as office space and is a national monument.
