In the center of Zaandam, next to the Kleine Schutsluis (Little Lock), lies a lock completed in 1909 after modifications in 1904. The structure combines robust engineering with functional simplicity: bluestone rebates and gate valves in the outer lock head, 12 m² toll gates in the ebb gates, and twelve metal toll gates in the flood gates of the inner lock head. A separate shed houses the gate valves.
The Kleine Schutsluis was modified in 1906 and 1908. It was fitted with granite gate beam grooves and oak sills for a row of gate beams in the outer lock head, plus two revolving cranes with a lifting capacity of 500 kg.
