Belgian War Graves Welkenraedt

The cemetery in Welkenraedt contains Belgian war graves from the First and Second World Wars. In some cases, these are cenotaphs.

The following soldiers fell during the First World War and are buried here:

BRAUN Nicolas, age 29, from Welkenraedt, soldier in the 9th Engineer Battalion of the 9th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army, killed in action at Landegem on October 31, 1918, 11 days before the end of the war.

CELEN Pierre, age 35, born in Welkenraedt, sergeant first class in the Gendarmerie à Pied, died of illness on September 23, 1918, in the Hôpital Militaire Belge Abbaye de Valloires in Argoules on the Somme in France.

COLLARD-BOVY Jean, age 30, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, died in Welkenraedt on January 8, 1919, from injuries sustained in the war.

DEROOR Pierre, age 21, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 3rd Line Regiment, killed by shrapnel wounds to the whole body on December 14, 1915, in Zuidschote.

FERBECK Maximilien, age 23, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the Centre de triage du camp de Ruchard (France), died on August 8, 1917, in Doudeville (France) from illness.

GRIGNARD Alfred, age 24, from Moresnet, soldier in the 5th Line Regiment, killed in action in Werchter on his 24th birthday, August 19, 1915.

HARDY Antoine, age 23, born in Welkenraedt, sergeant in the 1st Chasseurs regiment, died of injuries in the military hospital l'Ocean in Bruges on October 24, 1918, caused by shrapnel in his upper legs.

HENDRICK Alexis, age 27, born in Welkenraedt, sergeant major in the 12th Line Regiment, died on February 16, 1919, in Liège, from an illness contracted during the war.

LENNERS Henri, age 21, died from injuries sustained in the war on December 10, 1919.

MEUNIER Pierre, age 46, born in Henri-Chapelle, war volunteer, killed in action in Adinkerke on August 8, 1918.

PAUQUET Alphonse, age 26, died from injuries sustained in the war on December 21, 1919.

PIRAPREZ François, age 23, born in Remersdaal, corporal in the 13th Line Regiment, died from injuries to his throat, back, and left leg at the l'Ocean military hospital in Bruges on November 2, 1918, just over a week before the end of the war.

STRAET Jean, age 30, born in Welkenraedt, corporal in the 1st Carabiniers Regiment, probably died from the effects of Spanish flu on March 14, 1919, in Welkenraedt.

VAN ROY Jean, age 29, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 10th Line Regiment, died in internment in the military hospital in Harderwijk (Netherlands) from illness on October 13, 1915.

BECKERS Jean, age 32, born in Welkenraedt, sergeant in the 31st Line Regiment, killed in action at Passchendaele on May 27, 1940.

CHARLIER François, age 25, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 22nd Line Regiment, killed in action in Hazebrouck (France) on May 24, 1940.

CLASSEN Gustave, age 34, born in Welkenraedt, member of the Armée Secret resistance movement, killed in action on September 16, 1944, in Herbesthal.

ERNST Gaston, age 31, born in Montzen, soldier in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, killed in action on May 15, 1940, in Écaussinnes-d'Enghien.

HOUSEN Alfons, age 26, born in Welkenraedt, second lieutenant in the 29th Line Regiment, died of his wounds in Ghent on June 8, 1940.

KEVER Jean, age 32, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 31st Line Regiment, killed in action in Moorslede on May 27, 1940.

MOUREAU Joseph, age 33, born in Welkenraedt, soldier in the 31st Line Regiment, killed in action at Passchendaele seven days before his 34th birthday.

NIESSEN Joseph, age 20, from Welkenraedt, soldier in the 1st Cyclistes Frontières regiment, died in an accident on May 10, 1940, in Hauset.

SARTENAR Albert, age 24, from Welkenraedt, soldier in a cyclistes squadron of the 6th Infantry Division, killed in action in Kwaadmechelen on May 13, 1940.

WINTGENS René, age 25, born in Welkenraedt, corporal in the 4th Cyclistes regiment, killed in action in Knesselare on May 27, 1940.

CLAESSEN Gustave, born in Welkenraedt, member of the resistance in the Armée Secret, killed in action in Lontzen.

DEFAUWES Joseph, age 20, born in Welkenraedt, member of the Armée Secret resistance movement, killed in action on August 26, 1944, in Liège.

FRANSSEN Arthur, age 19, born in Welkenraedt, member of the Armée Secret resistance movement, killed in action on September 2, 1944, in Liège.
