The Batenburg Cannon is an old cast-iron cannon on display in the village of Batenburg, in the municipality of Wijchen, Gelderland. The piece stands near the ruins of Batenburg Castle, one of the oldest castles in the Netherlands. The cannon commemorates the castle's military history, which was besieged and destroyed several times, including during the Eighty Years' War.
The current cannon is likely no longer part of the castle's original armament, but was installed later as a historical symbol. It is a small, heavy field cannon that likely dates from the 17th or 18th century. Originally, it served for defense or ceremonial use. Today, it primarily serves as a monumental object commemorating the turbulent past of Batenburg and its castle.
The whole – the ruins, the cannon, and its location on the Meuse River – forms a picturesque scene that attracts many visitors interested in history and old fortifications.
