On the Bolwerk, near the ramp of the old Willemsbrug, there is a sign providing information about the battles that took place here between 10 and 14 May 1940. In the early morning of 10 May 1940, 12 German seaplanes landed on the Meuse with soldiers on board. These soldiers occupied both bridges and established a small bridgehead on the north bank. Fighting over the bridges continued for days. Dutch fire prevented the Germans from using the bridges, but a counter-offensive to recapture them also came to nothing. On the afternoon of 14 May, the city was bombed and the Dutch troops in Rotterdam were forced to surrender.
