Fort Erfprins

Erfprins Barracks, officially known as Fort Erfprins, is a historic fort and military complex on the west side of Den Helder. Covering an area of approximately 49 hectares, it is the largest fort in the Netherlands.

History
The origins of Fort Erfprins date back to the early 19th century. After the English invasion in 1799, during which Den Helder was easily captured, Napoleon Bonaparte decided to strengthen the coastal defences of the area. In 1811, construction of the fort began as part of the Stelling Den Helder, a series of defensive works intended to protect the naval base and the hinterland.

After the French period, the fort served as a location for various military units, including the Coastal Artillery Regiment. During World War II, the fort was occupied by German troops and after the war it served as an internment camp for political prisoners for three years.

Current use
Today, Fort Erfprins is used as a training centre for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Since 1960, it has been known as Marinekazerne Erfprins and provides accommodation for various military courses and training programmes.

Visiting
Although the fort is not normally open to the public due to its military function, guided tours are occasionally organised. These offer a unique opportunity to experience the rich history and architecture of the fort. Those interested should register in advance via the official website of Fort Erfprins.
