Memorial Georges Guynemer

Georges GUYNEMER (°Paris 24/12/1894 – +Poelkapelle 11/9/1917)

From a young age Guynemer had a immense fascination with technology and in particular with flying. When the war broke out, he reported as a volunteer but was refused twice due to his poor health. In the end he was accepted as an apprentice mechanic at the end of November 1914.

Thanks to his drive, he soon rose to be fighter pilot in the n° 3 squadron, later known as the "Escadrilles des Cigognes" (the Storks), where he piloted amongst others the escadrille Morane-Saulnier and Nieuport airplanes.

He achieved 53 recognised and over 30 probable victories. He himself was shot down seven times and injured twice. The highest scoring flying ace at the time, he died in mysterious circumstances.
