Zentralfriedhof Vienna

The Zentralfriedhof in Vienna contains many war graves from different nationalities.

One of these graves if that of Walter Nowotny. He is seen as one of the best fighter pilots ever.

As an Austrian he fought with the Luftwaffe and shot down 258 enemy planes in the Second World War.

He was the first pilot to shoot down an enemy plane with a jet fighter (Messerschmidt 262) and he also developed a lot of fighting tactics with fighter jets.

On 8 November 1944, he was shot down by American fighters and did not survive the crash.
