Memorial Victims Tarakan 1942 Dutch Field of Honour Loenen

This memorial, at the Lonen War Cemetery, commemorates the Dutch crewmembers of the coastal batteries Peningki and Karoengan in the Dutch Indies.

After their surrender, they were murdered on a Japanese ship near Tarakan and their bodies were thrown overboard.

This memorial contains the names of the known victims. The names of the 125 other, most Indonesian, victims were not known. They are also commemorated.

Resistance fighter identified almost 80 years after World War II

Almost 80 years after he was arrested and disappeared during World War II, the remains of resistance fighter Cornelis Pieter Kreukniet have been identified. The DNA of a second cousin has determined that the remains that were excavated in 1947 from an anonymous grave on the Waalsdorpervlakte are Kreukniet, the Ministry of Defense reported on Saturday.
