Netherlands, the Gelderland Netterden

After a heavy battle the village of Netterden, Gelderland was liberated on March 31, 1945 by The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada Regiment. 10 members of this regiment were killed on March 30, 1945 during this liberation. In honor and remembrance of these soldiers a memorial was unveiled on March 28, 2015 by Johan Küster, chairman of Vereniging Leefbaarheid Netterden and next of kin Joann Pellerin, daughter of L/Sgt Rocco Andrew Speziali (photo 3).

Prior to the unveil was a memorial service in the St. Walburgis church. The 5 killed passengers, 4 Canadians and 1 Englishman, of a crashed Lancaster in Netterden (May 17, 1943) and the deceased of the bombing of Emmerich (October 7, 1944) were remembered during this memorial service.

Next to the memorial there is also a Freedom bench.
