Biography
Wheeler was commissioned into The Royal Ulster Rifles in 1935. He served in Palestine during the Arab Revolt, was involved in intelligence and staff roles during WWII, and led a Special Operations Executive mission in Albania. After returning to Allied lines, he rejoined 2 RUR for the Normandy campaign.
Post-war, Wheeler held senior staff positions during the Palestine Emergency and at the War Office. He commanded 1 RUR during the Cyprus Emergency and later led 39 Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. His final roles included Chief of Staff for I (British) Corps, NATO’s SHAPE, and HQ BAOR. He retired in 1971.
