Major Mouton was killed together with mid-upper gunner Lieutenant Bunce during a mission to bomb the oil storage tanks on the north bank of Danube at Giurgiu, south of Bucharest on 28th June 1944. Bomber B-24 EV 970F was hit by night fighters. Mouton and Bunce were killed, the rest of the crew managed to bail out and became Prisoners-of-War. Major Mouton and Lieutenant Bunce were first buried at a small cemetery near the crash site and were later reburied at the memorial cemetery in Sofia, Bulgaria. Mouton is one of seven South Africans that are buried in Sofia.
