Richard B. McCarthy was born March 19th, 1920 in McDonald as son of Kate Campbell McCarthy and John Kerr McCarthy. He graduated from his home town High School.
Richard was drafted on March 30th, 1943. He entered military service in Fort Geo Meade, Maryland on April 6th, 1943. December 16th, 1943 he left for the Pacific, arriving on December 21st. He was posted to Medical Detachment, 502nd AAA Gun Battallion, 7th Infantry Division as Corporal and Combat Medic. December 8th, 1945 he returned to the US, arriving December 25th.
January 5th, 1946, he was honorably discharged in the Separation Center Camp in Atterbury, Indiana.
After the war he continued his studies, graduating in 1948 from Washington and Jefferson College. In 1951 he and his family moved to York, Pennsylvania. During the 50’s and 60’s he was employed as District Manager for Pfizer Laboratories in Harrisburg. Later on he worked for the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company and became Director of Development and Alumni Affairs at York College until his retirement in the middle of the 90’s. In 2002, he and his family moved to Alabama where he worked voluntarily for the First Presbyterian Church as a deacon; member of the Red Lion Country Club, as board member and president of the National Kidney Foundation, York Chapter and as board member and president of the York County Estate Planning Council.
Richard McCarthy passed away April 28th, 2011.
