Biography

Joseph Vaughan was educated at the National School, Bloxwich after which he was employed by the Hire Service Department in Leamore.
He volunteered for the Royal Navy in June,1941 and called up in November that year was pom pom gunner serving on MTB 638 during a series of successful action carried out 11/12.10.1944 in Adriatic for which he was award the DSM.

During the war he served From 26th November 1941 untill 22nd May 1946 on various ships but mainly on Motor Launches (ML) and Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB) such as MTB 670 and MTB 728.

I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty that they have learned with great pleasure that, on the advice by the First Lord the King has been graciously pleased to award you the Distinguished Service Medal for gallantry, coolness and skill shown when serving as a Pom-Pom Gunner of Motor Torpedo Boat 638 in a series of very succesful actions carried out by a Force of Light Coastal Craft, during the night of 11th/12th October 1944."
