Stumbling stone Veenbergplein 10zw

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine of stumbling blocks) commemorate:

Joseph de Brave (born 1911, deported 1942 from Westerbork, murdered 31-12-1942 Auschwitz)
Johanna Maria Theresia De Brave-Perels (born 1913, deported 18-9-1942 from Westerbork, murdered 21-9-1942 Auschwitz)
Salomon Charles de Brave (born 1938, deported 18-9-1942 from Westerbork, murdered 21-9-1942 Auschwitz)
Alfred de Brave (born 1941, deported 18-9-1942 from Westerbork, murdered 21-9-1942 Auschwitz)

The small copper plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.

JOSEPH DE BRAVE

VEENBERGPLEIN 10 BLACK
Joseph de Brave worked as a traveling salesman in household goods. He married Johanna Perels. Together they went to live in Haarlem on the Veenbergplein, where they had two sons: Salomon Charles and Alfred.
In 1942, Joseph went into hiding at an unknown address, as evidenced by a search warrant from the Haarlem police for 'changing his place of residence without the required permit'. He was arrested and deported to Westerbork on 17 September. There he met his wife and children, who had been betrayed at their hiding place in Soest a few days earlier. Together with them he was deported to Auschwitz on September 18, where he was murdered a few months later.

Johanna Perels was the youngest in a family of five children in Amsterdam. She married Joseph de Brave, with whom she had two children in Haarlem. In 1942 Johanna went into hiding with her sons in Soest, where she rented a room from a widow at 1 Lange Bergstraat.
Johanna and her children were betrayed on September 12, 1942 by an anonymous tipster and arrested that same day. The police report states that the hiding person did not know that Johanna and her sons were Jewish. Johanna did not wear a star and the J in her identity card had been made illegible. She also wore a silver chain with a cross around her neck.
On September 15, Johanna and her sons were deported to Westerbork. Shortly afterwards, her husband also arrived in Westerbork. The entire family was deported to Auschwitz on September 18, where Johanna and the children were immediately murdered.
