Han van Zomeren bridge

There are 1900 bridges in Amsterdam. Some bridges have been named as a tribute to and in memory of a resistance fighter.

This new bridge was opened on February 9, 2009 by Alderman Paul van Grieken.

There is a plaque on both sides of the bridge. The text reads:

'Han van Zomeren July 16, 1920 - October 10, 1941

Han van Zomeren lived in Mesdagstraat; he pressed
pamphlets calling for resistance. Han was betrayed and
executed in 1941 at the age of 21 on the Larense Heide.
He was the first and also the youngest graphic artist to be executed
by German occupiers. In 1952 he became
reburied at the Honorary Cemetery in Overveen.'
