"This stone
is erected by the
Yeovil Town Council
in grateful recognition
of the splendid services
rendered on behalf of town by the
British red Cross Society
in providing a hospital for the care of
1200 wounded sailors and soldiers
and to the Baptist Church
for the generous loan of these
premises for the purpose
during the Great War 1915-1919
Alderman W.R.E, Mitchelmore
Mayor of Yeovil"

This V.A.D. hospital opened in the Newnham Hall donated by the next door Baptist Church. The first patients in 1915 were 103 from the 1200 territorials and Army Service Corps billeted in the town and of these only one died. The hospital held 62 beds and during its life 1,200 men were treated there with only 4 deaths.
