At GeoFort in Herwijnen, there is an authentic military bunker, a so-called group shelter, which is part of the historic New Dutch Waterline. This concrete bunker was built in the 1930s to protect a group of 8 to 12 soldiers from artillery shelling and air raids. The shelter is made of thick reinforced concrete, usually has one entrance and does not contain weapons or loopholes – it was therefore intended purely for protection and not for combat.
The bunker has been preserved and is part of the educational and interactive experience of GeoFort. Visitors can sometimes view this bunker as part of a guided tour or educational program.
In addition, there is also a picture bunker on the grounds of GeoFort, a unique space that serves as a presentation room. This space is located on the old fortress island and is used for various activities and presentations.
GeoFort offers a combination of historical elements and modern, interactive experiences that focus on themes such as climate, energy and geography. The fort is located on a historic fortress island and has been transformed into an educational theme park where visitors can learn about the future of our planet in a playful way.
