Remains G-Casemate Meerdijk

The Remains of G-Casemate Meerdijk is a historic defensive structure located near Asperen, along the Meerdijk in the province of Gelderland. This casemate is part of the New Dutch Waterline, a defense system that protected the Netherlands by means of controlled flooding (inundations) and military fortifications.

What is a G-casemate?
A G-casemate is a type of machine gun casemate, built in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete base with a cast steel dome of approximately 14 cm thick. The casemate had a base of approximately 6.5 by 6.5 meters. These structures were designed to withstand enemy troops and were part of the defense lines of the Netherlands.

History of the G-Casemate Meerdijk
During the Second World War, in 1941, the German occupiers removed the cast steel domes of almost all G-casemates in the Netherlands, often using explosives. This resulted in considerable damage to the concrete structures. The domes were melted down for use in the German war industry.

Restoration and current function
In 2016, the G-casemate on the Meerdijk underwent a restoration. The trenches were re-laid, and the casemate was given a new, thin-walled iron dome. Today, this casemate functions as an observation hut over the surrounding inundation area, giving visitors an impression of the historical defenses and the landscape.

Visitor information
The G-casemate Meerdijk is freely accessible and is part of the walking area along the Diefdijk. Visitors can explore the reconstructed trenches and the casemate, which offers a unique view of the military history of the Netherlands.
