On the Oude Rijkswerf Willemsoord in Den Helder, there is a German bunker from World War II, a tangible reminder of the occupation period. This bunker was part of Widerstandsnest 107 M, where the ‘M’ stands for ‘Marine’. The complex was set up by the German occupiers as a naval defence post within the Atlantic Wall, the line of defence that stretched from Norway to Spain.
The bunker served as a shelter for German soldiers during Allied bombing raids. Some of these bunkers are still present on the Willemsoord site. Specifically, there is a bunker known as Schuilbunker 2, located in the middle of the shipyard, which was part of the DDD - W.N.107 M complex.
Today, the Oude Rijkswerf Willemsoord is a monumental and cultural heritage complex that houses museums, restaurants and nautical institutions, among other things. The presence of the German bunker on this site offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience a piece of military history up close.
