Operation Shingle
“At 2300 hours on 23 January 1944, when his company was ambushed east of Nettuno, Italy, by approximately 30 Germans, PFC Robbins, acting on his own initiative, crept forward alone over 25 yards of open terrain dragging his machine gun through streams of enemy bullets which passed only a few inches from his head. Although his company commander and another man were killed a few feet ahead of him, and others wounded, PFC Robbins proceeded until he reached a point only 50 yards from the enemy, set up his machine gun and fired point-blank into the enemy positions, killed 8 Germans, knocked out two machine guns and caused complete confusion among the enemy. The cool courage of PFC Robbins no only enabled his company to withdraw and reorganize for a counterattack, but inspired them to such an extent that the counterattack was successful.”
