The group shelter at GeoFort is a military bunker that is part of the New Dutch Waterline. This waterline was built to defend the west of the Netherlands by flooding parts of the country (inundation), preventing enemy troops from advancing.
A group shelter is a small concrete bunker that was intended to protect a group of soldiers (usually 8 to 12 men) from artillery shelling and air raids. These shelters were mainly built during and after the First World War, especially in the 1930s. They are made of thick reinforced concrete, usually have a single entrance, and do not contain weapons or loopholes – so they were purely intended for protection and not for combat.
GeoFort is located at Fort bij de Nieuwe Steeg in Herwijnen. This fort is part of the New Dutch Waterline. A group shelter is still present on the grounds of GeoFort. It has been preserved and can sometimes be visited as part of a guided tour or educational program.
