On the grounds of GeoFort in Herwijnen there is a historic group shelter (also called a group bunker), which is part of the New Dutch Waterline. This waterline was a defense system that was built in the 19th and early 20th century to protect the west of the Netherlands from enemy invasions by flooding parts of the country.
What is a group shelter?
A group shelter is a concrete bunker that was intended to protect a group of soldiers (usually 8 to 12 men) from artillery bombardments and air raids. These shelters were mainly built in the years after the First World War, especially in the 1930s. They are built of reinforced concrete and usually have a single entrance; they do not contain weapons or loopholes, as they were purely intended for protection and not for combat.

Present day
The group shelter at GeoFort has been preserved and is part of the fort grounds. The building may be accessible to visitors, for example during guided tours or as part of educational programs offered by GeoFort. GeoFort itself is an interactive theme park focusing on geography and technology, and is located in a historic fort that is part of the New Dutch Waterline.
