The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Elbridge G. Chapman, Jr. (ASN: 0-6232), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 5th Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached to 1st Battalion), 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., near Thiaucourt, France, 12 September 1918. During a heavy enemy counterattack, Captain Chapman remained constantly in front of his company, directing their fire and encouraging their efforts. His bravery was mainly responsible in preventing the enemy's advance and the taking of his position.
