River casemate North

Large Casemate "Staay Venlo", the official name was "Rivierkazemat Noord", close to the 'oude veerhuis de Staay) en "Rivierkazemat Zuid, next to the railroadcrossing of the Blerickse Brugstraat to St Antoniuslaan
The casemate was located directly opposite the Maashaven of Venlo.
This casemate had to secure "Zuid" and keep the access to the Maas bridges in Venlo free.

Both river casemates were built in 1936 to defend the Maas bridges against a possible German attack. The 5cm gun in Rivierkazemat Noord was put out of action after just a few hours by a German hit in the barrel, see battle report Sgt. Boesten (NIMH).
