Biography

Herb was one jump short of qualifying to take part in Operation Market-Garden, so his only combat was during the Battle of the Bulge. In January of 1945, he was wounded by a German shell fragment near Recogne, north-west of Foy, Belgium. Both of his legs were broken and injured so badly that he spent the next nine months in bed and another nine months learning to walk again before he was discharged after the war ended. He got a degree in engineering, married, and raised nine children. Herb spent many years as the president of "The Men of Easy Company," and took great pride in working with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg to raise money for the Airborne memorial on the south edge of the Jack Woods (Bois Jacques) between Foy and Bizory.

His obituary in the Star Tribune can be found here.
