On Sunday 22 September 2019 the annual commemoration was held at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek. Very many people came to the cemetery. Several veterans of the Battle of Arnhem were attending the ceremony.
On 21 September 2018 the Airborne Landings and commemoration was held at Ginkel Heath near Ede, Netherlands. Very many were attending the event because it not only was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, but the weather couldn't have been better. British crown prince Charles and Dutch princess Beatrix attended the ceremony and talked to the veterans after the commemeration.
On Thursday 19 September 2019 a memorial plaque for Hendrika van der Vlist was unveiled at the Schoonoord restaurant in Oosterbeek. During the Battle of Arnhem Hendrika lived with her parents in Hotel Schoonoord. The hotel was in the frontline of the Battle and British soldiers started to use it as a dressing station. Together with other volunteers, Hendrika helped hundreds of wounded British, Polish and German soldiers. The plaque was an initiative by Michiel ter Horst and Sophie Lambrechtsen, children of Kate ter Horst.
On 18 September 2019 the Airborne Landmark 'Windows of the past' was unveiled at Ginkel Heath near Ede. After the speeches John Jeffries, an Arnhem veteran who jumped at Ginkel Heath with 4th Parachute Brigade on 18 September 1944, had the honour to do the unveiling. The ceremony was followed by a couple of fly-by's.
On Saturday 7 September 2019 a memorial was unveiled for the 10th Battalion the Parachute Regiment. The location is at Burrough on the Hill, near Somerby in Leicestershire. The project was an initiative of the 'Friends of the Tenth'. This foundation raised the required money via crowd funding. Around 600 people were attending the ceremony.
On 18 September 2019 it is exactly 75 years ago that the 4th Parachute Brigade landed on Ginkel Heath at Ede as part of Operation Market Garden. So that will be the perfect day to unveil the new Airborne Landmark. The landmark is a scuplture, not a memorial. It gives an impression of the Airborne Landing.
On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the Wings of Freedom Airshow took place in Ede: the highlight of the four-day event. Partly due to the good weather, visitors came in large numbers to the temporary airport on the quay. The event was held for the 75 years commemorations of Market Garden.
On Thursday 5 April 2018 was the official start of the exhibition 'For Valour' in the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. In this exhibition the five Arnhem Victoria Crosses are on display for the first time
On 3 February 2018 a memorial was unveiled in remembrance of Short Stirling Mark I R9197 BU-V, which has crashed near Leusden exactly 75 years earlier. The ceremony was attended by next of kin of the perished aircrew from the United Kingdom and Canada.
The Sunday afternoon in the 'Arnhem weekend' a commemoration is held at the memorial in Wolfheze. It is usually well attended by the veterans of the Glider Pilot Regiment. This year four Glider Pilots and a veteran of the 7th KOSB joined this service.
One of the events on the Saturday of the 'Arnhem weekend' is the Race to the Bridge. A long column of historic vehicles driving from the former Landing Zones at the Telefoonweg in Renkum to the Arnhem Bridge.
The Airborne commemoration at Ginkel Heath took place on 16 September 2017. Due to low clouds the early parachute drops had to be cancelled.
On Sundat 17 September 2017 the annual remembrance service took place at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek. About 25 veterans of the Battle of Arnhem attended this service joined by another 25 World War Two veterans.
On 15 September 2017 three veterans of the Glider Pilot Regiment landed with modern gliders on former landing zone X. This landing field was one of the field used in Operation Market Garden. Hundreds of Gliders brought soldiers and equipment to the Arnhem battlefield then.
On Wednesday 13 September 2017 was a service for the rededication of the grave of L/Cpl William Loney of the 2nd Parachute Battalion at the Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
On 2 September 2017 the Airborne March was held in Oosterbeek. Amongst the guests were seven veterans of the Battle of Arnhem.
At Carew Cheriton in the south of Wales is a beautiful WWII control tower. A group of volunteers restored the derelict tower and turned it in a great museum which tells the story of this historic airfield.
On 30 March 2017 the information centre Airborne at the Bridge opened at the new location. Guests of honour at this event were three Arnhem veterans: Arthur Letchford, David Whiteman and Geoff Roberts. Arthur is one of the few remaining veterans who reached the bridge and fought here.
On 26 March 1943 Short Stirling I N-3709 of RAF 7 squadron crashed near the village of Etten. The aircraft was on the return flight from a bomb raid over Germany. It was set on fire by German anti aircraft guns. It had just crossed the German-Dutch border when it was shot down by a German Messerschmitt 110 nightfighter. The seven crew members all perished.
OOSTERBEEK - On 16 September 2016 the British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson attended an extra commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem at the Military Cemetery in Oosterbeek. Also attending was the Dutch Foreign Secretary Bert Koenders.
There are a couple of hundred graves for unknown soldiers at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek. These soldiers could not be identified when they were buried shortly after the war. Recently and with the help of modern DNA technology six soldiers of the Border Regiment could be identified, 72 years after they had passed away.
