Operation Chastise was a daring WWII RAF mission targeting German dams using innovative bouncing bombs. On 16–17 May 1943, 617 Squadron breached the Möhne and Edersee dams, causing massive flooding and damage to German industry, though repairs were swift. The raid cost 53 aircrew lives and killed around 1,600 civilians, including many forced laborers.
